South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Frequently Asked Questions

My boys are 12 and 13 years old, and I would like to take them to South Dakota for some pheasant hunting. Do they need a license?

Your boys will need a youth hunting license, and will also need to have successfully completed a hunter safety course as well.  We welcome the chance to work with the "future of our sport".

I'd like to bring my hunting dog with me when I come. Will you have a kennel for the dog? Is there any extra charge for bringing my dog?

Your trained hunting dog is welcome at the ranch and there are new kennel facilities available for your dog.  We do not charge extra for kennel space.

Do you provide a bird cleaning service ?

Bird cleaning is available at the ranch and is included in the Bird Dog Lounge all inclusive hunting package. For the guests of the Wagon Wheel Lodge, the same service is also available for $3.00 per bird. All the birds are professionally cleaned, packaged and frozen. Your birds will be packaged into your coolers for you at your departure time.

How many hunters can be in one shooting group? Is there a limit?

South Dakota state law is a maximum of 20 hunters in the field at one time.

What is a typical day like for people staying with you?

The day starts with gourmet coffee brewing, and a hearty breakfast shortly there after.  After breakfast, relax and enjoy our sporting clays course before we take to the field in our 4x4 field buses (equipped with pop and water coolers, gun racks, shells, etc.)  Once we are in the hunting fields, you will see hundreds, if not thousands of birds during the day.  Our hunts are operated with safe and ethical hunting practices.  Our guides do not carry guns (your on your own to kill your limit!) and are fun to be around.  Our dogs are all professionally trained and are close working reliable retrievers who are a absolute joy to watch.  After the hunt, you can relax around the fire pit, take part in more sporting clays, take in a game of pool or horseshoes, or just sit back on the deck or in the lodge and reflect on the day. Supper will be sure to fill the largest of appetites and consists of good South Dakota beef, chicken, pheasant, and pork, along with numerous salads, side dishes and sinful desserts.  A good nights sleep is almost assured!

Do we have to use steel shot for shotgun loads or is lead okay?

Lead shot is legal to use and very effective in shot sizes of 4 or 5 shot size.  12 gauge shotguns are recommended, but those with very good shooting skills have had success with 16 and 20 gauge as well.  You do not need to have a plug in your gun either.
